The trace element iodine, as a component of thyroid hormones, plays a vital role in the thyroid’s function as the body’s „accelerator“. Thyroid hormones control a wide range of bodily functions. The main natural sources of iodine are, first and foremost, saltwater fish, seafood and seaweed, which accumulate iodine compounds dissolved in seawater, as well as iodised salt, which is available in many countries with iodine-deficient soils due to the importance of this trace element. During certain stages of life, or when using non-iodised table salt, taking iodine supplements may be advisable. The need for this trace element increases particularly during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as it is essential for the mental development of the unborn child.

From a sustainability perspective, seaweeds in particular are regarded as especially valuable sources of iodine. For this reason, Phyto-Jod 200 was developed using natural iodine derived from the brown seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum, commonly known as kelp.
